Kansas City, MO

Newmark Zimmer had the privilege of serving as the owner’s representative for the Kansas City Art Institute’s new Paul and Linda DeBruce Hall. This newly constructed facility spans 18,000 square feet and is specifically designed to enhance the liberal arts, art history, and creative writing programs. With a project budget of $8,625,000, the building features cutting-edge classroom designs along with a comprehensive student services suite and faculty offices.

Located in a historic district, the development of DeBruce Hall required extensive dialogue with the adjacent neighborhood to ensure the project harmonized with the surrounding community. Consequently, the final design includes a striking large atrium that not only provides natural daylight but also showcases various pieces of artwork. This design choice creates a significant common area where students can gather and collaborate effectively.

In addition to its role as the owner’s representative, Newmark Zimmer managed several critical aspects of the project. The team oversaw budgeting and scheduling, successfully secured city approvals, and handled the procurement of furniture. These efforts ensured that every detail met the project’s high standards.

As a result of these comprehensive efforts, DeBruce Hall has received numerous accolades, reflecting its exceptional design and impact. The building earned the Kansas City AIA Design Excellence Award in 2020, the Central States Honor Award in 2021, the KCBJ Capstone Award in 2021, the IIDA MADA Gold Award in 2020, and the Brick in Architecture Silver Award in 2020. These awards underscore the project’s success and its significant contribution to the community.
